Safety and Health, Important Factors Post Flooding

When rivers and streams near your home rise above their usual levels, the water that was once contained safely can now travel almost anywhere. If your home is downhill, it is especially vulnerable to flood damage. After the waters recede to normal levels again, cleaning up needs to begin immediately.

When Dallas homes have signs of flood damage on their exterior, this does not always indicate the severity of the issue on the interior. Basements can remain flooded even after the area seems to be clear, and this can require them to be pumped out. Ground floors are often the hardest hit by floods, after basements, with upper floors being less affected. They can also be flooded if an area is hammered by extreme flooding. Any area that was inundated should be considered unsafe and a threat to health.

Because floods bring sediments with them, it is easy to see how high the flood waters rose. Carpeting and draperies can allow flood waters to seep up higher than the actual water level, and saturate floors and walls under and behind these textiles. Complete cleaning should include these areas, as well. If restoration is started soon enough, these areas may be able to be restored without replacements being necessary. However, the severity and nature of the groundwater may dictate tossing the padding and carpets. Draperies can, in most cases, be laundered and rehung, but carpeting is often destroyed. At SERVPRO, we will attempt to clean and sanitize carpeting if we are notified in time to do an assessment of the damage, but often the carpeting and padding have been too highly contaminated to be considered safe.

Some items might be better for your family's health if they are replaced than if they are cleaned in a restorative effort. Mattresses make the list of objects that should most likely be replaced. While box springs are not often touched or handled, they can harbor smells and become breeding locations for bacteria and mold, so they are often considered ruined and in need of being replaced, also.

Professionals at SERVPRO can help you with the entire process, and explain why certain things must be thrown out to ensure your health is not affected by contamination from the flood. It is not just the structure, both inside and out, that is damaged by a flood. While our technicians are monitoring your home to ensure that things are not only being cleaned correctly but also dried completely, we can explain what actions you should take. These activities can include throwing away body care products that were below the flood line, food, even those in sealed cans and jars, and many other things.

We want to make sure that you and your family can not only return to normal living in your home after there's been flood damage, but that you can do so safely. Please call us at SERVPRO of Northwest Dallas at (214) 361-7887 for all of your flood damage cleaning and restoration needs.
